Why Does It Stay With You

Some things never leave you

They become a part of you

Define you, build you, make you who you are

Like the death of a loved one

At an early age—and you watched it all happen

Like your first award at school

Or the first time you were picked on

Like that inspirational quote from your high school teacher about getting out of town and chasing your dreams

Others are more simple and subtle

More commonplace and mundane

Like the smell of your grandmas house

Or the laughter of that young, first love

These things move us, shake us and break us

But sometimes something totally unexpected comes into our lives and stay with us

You can call it and it follows

You can love it and it loves back

You can feed it, nourish it, grow it

But it won’t leave your side

When you find it astray in the streets

It loves instinctively

These furry friends in four legs

But why does it stay with you?

Because you named it and you’re both attached
